There have been rumbles within the group that more spice and excitement is needed on future excursions. In an effort to fulfill these indirect discussions, preparations are in progress for a trip through the Calypso Monte Cristo de Palos Verde Divide. In addition to the demanding prerequisites of past trips certain training and vehicle preparation will be required. On this particular trip the term "offroad" will not be used as it belies a negative connotation and could lead to mistakes in judgment. As with past excursions strict adherence to all National Park Service and Bureau of Land Management rules and regulations will be required. For example, there will be no "cross-country" driving and all vehicles should stay on the road. Camping is allowed only in previously established camp sites which are not easy to locate as there is no camping in the road, day or night. The limit of seven vehicles will be strictly enforced as passing, when a location can be found, is a very exciting and humbling experience. Remember, the Vehicle Code requires that the vehicle traveling downhill must back up to a safe location to allow the vehicle traveling up the mountain to pass. On this particular trip this may require that you back up over a mile or so on winding roads that are no wider than six feet. A little preliminary practice is considered prudent. An in depth review of both your automobile and life insurance policies would be a logical endeavor. Although not required it is recommended that a power of Attorney be executed and all legal documents such as wills, trusts, etc. be updated. We have been advised that should your vehicle leave the road, for whatever reason, there is no expedient method or desire to retrieve it, or "you". So should you leave the road it is recommended that you put your head between your legs and kiss your ass goodbye as your trail mates wave and bid you a fond farewell. These are just a few preliminary thoughts as a plethora of additional information will be available prior to hitting the road, so to speak. When the dates are firmed up they will be posted so all can make their plans accordingly. This will be one of those exciting outings that your wife, or significant other, won't want you to miss....... |
