NEWBERRY
. . . . OASIS
1962
NEWBERRY
. . . Oasis of the Mojave!
They called it “Water” before they called it “Newberry”
for here the ancient wagon trains found their first water point in the
desert after leaving the Colorado River.
Within the sweeping 225 square miles of the Newberry Valley ample
water today spells out the promise of unlimited potentials of future
development.
Wells with an average static water level of 30 ft. produce as
much as 2700 gallons per minute from levels of 100-200 feet.
Large
areas of land at reasonable prices, with transportation facilities of
railroads, excellent highways and a nearby airport, await the coming of
men whose eyes are turned toward tomorrow and whose dreams are directed
towards progress.
The land awaits the farmer…for in this beautiful valley any
crop not susceptible to frost, fruit trees and grapes can be grown
successfully.
Already 1¾ acres of hot houses have produced 100,000 lbs. of top
grade tomatoes annually.
The mild climate is excellent for turkey and chicken raising.
There
is increasing progress in cattle raising and dairying.
A 251-day growing season yields small grains and six cuttings of
alfalfa a year.
Land is available at $125 to $500 per acre.
Rentals as well as sale property may be had.
The land awaits the miner…rocks and gem stones of almost every
geological age and type may be found as well as many mineral deposits.
Inerto Co., Santa Fe, National Lead Corp. Zenith Chemical Company
has quarries and mining interests in the valley and surrounding
mountains.
Hard rock is mined and crushed for beautifully colored terrazzo
floors and roofing.
The land awaits the traveler…for in the canyons and mountains
wonders of scenic beauty…paradise for “rockhounds” and collectors
of gems and semi-precious stones for those who would make their camps
beneath the stars.
With
a valley population of some 1,550 the town of Newberry, 18 miles east of
Barstow on Highway 66, has a beautiful elementary school, tow churches,
tow stores, four cafes, five service stations, one garage, four motels,
three real estate brokers, one barber shop and one machine shop, natural
gas, electricity, telephone and Greyhound bus service.
The Chamber of Commerce, Farm Bureau, Community Center Group,
PTA, 4-H and Scout troops provide civic and social activities.
Community spirit is the trademark of Newberry.
