Hookups Desert Adventures; How it All Began

Return

A group of recreational vehicle owner, most residing in he East San Gabriel Valley, created a club with common goals and destination interests about 1985.  The Group selected the appellation, "The Hookups of Southern California".  Midge Vincent evidently was one of the primary influences in the selection of that name.  As it implies, this group of campers preferred for the most part to have outings scheduled primarily in settings where there would be available water, electricity, and waste disposal.....a campsite where their motorhomes could each "hook up".

Thus, it was a bit courageous for an exclusively dry camping experience to be planned in March of 1992 in the Mojave in a little known desert township east of Barstow called Newberry Springs, California.  The Wagonmasters for that inaugural event were Tom and Edith Jones assisting Robb and Lenore Hicks.  Similar outings would follow, more often at two year intervals, up to the present.

A three acre man made lake separates two 20 acre parcels of land, and affords a primitive oasis dotted by Cottonwood, Poplar, Elm, Fruitless Mulberry, Chinese Evergreen, and a few Palm trees.  The location has been developed over the past 20+ years and everything is drip irrigated through a 18 valve system controlled by a timer.  To make this possible over three thousand feet of PVC lines were trenched and installed.  Hank and DeAnna Rice own the 20 acres north of the body of water now named "Lake HiRi", and the Hicks own the 20 acres to the south.

The enjoyment that has been experienced here by the Hookups is indicated by their biannual excursions over the past 10 years and the desire to return in the future.  This enjoyable and active group are always welcome at Lake HiRi.
