April
1994 Dear “Hook-Ups” There
are three kinds of people—those who make things happen, those who
watch things happen, and those who say, “what happened?”
You Hook-Ups are those who make things happen—such as good
food, good times—and even a real honest to goodness bridge over not so
troubled waters. And we
have one member who made strings and strings of not working
lights—work again. Those
of you who could not be with us missed the red ribbon cutting and
Champagne toast when we dedicated the bridge after placing signs at each
entrance. One says “ORE
HOUSE” the other side says “OAR HOUSE” and a nice plaque from the
bridge fairy with all workers names on it.
Along the shore of the lake—near the south entrance to the
bridge, Robb placed a memorial monument where he killed Al Thompson’s
speedboat. Robb
and Lenore each had an alternator virus attack hit each of their cars
over the weekend. First
“Hook Up” arrivals on Thursday were Jim and Midge—and Tom and
Edith—then came Robb and Don who left both their wives to arrive the
next day. About noon Friday
slowly the R.V. Park started filling up with 15 rigs on the south side
of the lake and three rigs on the north side.
Friday night we all enjoyed soups at the Hicks club house.
Nine O’clock Saturday morning a meeting was held at Lenore’s
brother Hank clubhouse on the north shore of the lake.
Art was the Master of Ceremonies passing out very appropriate
sticker badges to each man who worked on the bridge.
Then the bridge signs and plaque was given over to Robb and
Lenore. A champagne toast
was made—then the ribbon cutting.
We all crossed over the bridge and some went to the “Sweetwater
Shooting Range” where they had competition shooting and some played
competition “Hand and Foot” card game.
Some went to see the “Dome House”. Dinner
Saturday night was at Hicks’ clubhouse where we had a great bar-b-que
dinner. After dinner our
Wagon Master and assistances handed out prizes for the best Bolo tie
(Jim Vincent) best buckle (Fay Copeland) best bolo and buckle set (Al
Beisel). Prizes for the
“Hand and Foot” game went to Lois Rok—Al Beisel—Ruth Ware and
Don Fithian. Jim Vincent
was given the prize for the shooting competition.
Also after dinner, Leon Hastings and his partner taught us
country western line dancing and later showed us how it really looks
like when done right. Sunday
morning coffee—cereal—rolls—juice was served again at the Club
House. Those
attending were—Toni Armstrong—Lois Barleman—Harper and Agnes
Brubaker—Frank and Eileen Cavanaugh—Fay and Lurline
Copeland—Barney and Tiz Fry—Ken and Betty Hanke—Robb and Lenore
Hicks—Tom and Edith Jones—Art and Marilyn Keenan—Ed and La Vern
Kissell—Bob and Catherine Miller—Bob and Dotty Petersen—Al and
Lois Roh—Jim and Midge Vincent—Jim and Ruth Ware—Guests were Don
and Barbara Fithian—Al and Eileen Beisel—Wayne Copeland—John
Petersen—Jeff and Kim Hicks. Again
we thank you Robb and Lenore—Tom and Edith.
The real character of a person can be measured by what he does
when no one is looking. All four of you did a lot of work and planning when we were
not looking. Thanks to you
Art—one thing you can give and still keep is your word.
And you told us it would be a nice looking bridge and it is. On Sunday eight of us “left overs” had our lunch out in the Oar House and Sunday night we had a cool breezy evening “chit chat” while also enjoying the Oar House. Lets all try to remember that a smile is a curved line that sets things straight and it adds a great deal to face value. Until we “Hook-Up” again this is Jim and Midge signing off.
