Hookups Build Bridges; 1993

by Barney and Tiz Fry

October 1993

Dear Hookups,

If you missed this one you missed a very constructive weekend.  The Bridge over Lake Hi Ri (Hicks—Rice) turned out to be a fantastic accomplishment.  Even though it wasn’t completed by Monday afternoon it has so much done that it is most rewarding.  It turned out to be a father—son project.  The Keenan’s son Pat and his fiancée, Genie, were going strong.  Unfortunately their son, Jeff, who lives in Las Vegas and who designed the bridge and did all of the blue prints and specs could only be there for 10 minutes.  The Hicks’ son Jeff and buddy, Dave helped loads.  Lenore Hicks brother, Hank Rice, who lives at one side of the lake worked shoulder to shoulder with Art.  And Hank’s son-in-law, Jeff, worked hard, too.  The Petersen’s son John was a prime mover for hours on end.  Hank’s daughter, Lisa, and 8 month old son Ryan watched.  Midge’s two 70+ boys, Jim and Paul Vincent were in the thick of it as were Jim Waltrip, Bob Miller, Bob Petersen, Al Roh, Ken Hanke and Jim Ware.  Robb was the busiest gopher around plus the underwater man who held Art’s boat steady when they did the under-the-bridge work.

We girls are of the generation that didn’t “sweat the equal rights to get to hammer and saw” but were satisfied to fix meals.  On Saturday the Hicks and Rices had a pig and a turkey cooked in a pit and Saturday night we lived “high on the hog” with only 45 people present—including a celebration of Hank and DeAnna’s 22nd wedding anniversary.  We thought that a video camera was part of Dottie’s anatomy as we didn’t see her without it all weekend.  Showtime at Christmas.

Out weather was unusual.  Everything from hot to windy to rainy with lightning and a rainbow to finish off with Monday morning.  It is a beautiful time of year to be on the desert.  Seven couples stayed over until Monday morning.  And we had such a great turnout.  We couldn’t have fixed all of those meals without Eileen and Rosie.  Barney and Frank did a lot of superintending.

Al T. and Robb had a blast playing with Al’s remote controlled miniature speedboat on Robb’s lake.  I’m sure there will be more boat races when we return there next April.

Lets HookUp again.   Tiz and Barney
