SUMMARY OF ACTIVITIES:
April of this year found Wagonmasters Robb and Lenore Hicks and Art and Marilyn Keenan selecting the theme of "The Historic Route 66 and the Fabulous 50's", as the Hookups revisited Newberry Springs, California and the bridge that most of the members helped construct over the lake call HiRi. Besides Friday night Chile, soups, and bread, a lecture by Hank Rice on the "Burma-Shave sign story; how it all began and ended." This complemented the fact that actual serial signs had been constructed permanently on the Rice-Hicks property, and temporary ones telling a short rhymed story personalized for two of the lady members to read as they first drove along the road leading to the Rice-Hicks compound.
Saturday was a busy day an early morning viewing of old memorabilia of Route 66 was followed by dune buggies traversing Troy Dry Lake bed to the Dome House of Mary Reynolds (Robb Hicks' sister) and husband added Reynolds unique Dome House. After Lunch Author and Lecturer Cliff Walker returned for a 3rd presentation to the RV'ers. He spoke on Bootlegging as described in his latest book, "One Eye Closed the Other Red; the California Bootlegging Years."
Following the lecture, a plunk-it tournament (tossing 1 ID heavy washers through outdoor carpeted door-shaped wooden frames fenestrated with three openings having increasing values of points scored.) was enjoyed by the men. The ladies proceeded with their own competition, a "Hand and Foot" card tournament.
Saturday evening found the group enjoying BBQ ribs and chicken provided (as a continuing "Bridge Appreciation") by DeAnna and Hank Rice. Also, Saturday Night "Keenan's Kollege of Musical Knowledge" of songs of the "50's" combined with Hicks' Kickin 66 Quiz completed the day. Prizes for he card sharks, the plunkit masters, and the evening quizzes were awarded just before bedtime for most. The hardy (and probably the younger members stayed up quite late stargazing on a crystal clear night around the fire-ring. Sunday breakfast was provided, as is traditional, by the wagonmasters before a business meeting and door prizes presentation completed the formal activities. Luncheon on ample leftovers was enjoyed by campers not departing until the following day.
